Everybody knows that foxes kill for fun, at least this is what they tell us. But is it true?

No.

Now why do some people find all their chickens dead in the chicken-house after a fox visit?  This is not killing for fun, it is thinking ahead. A fox is a wild animal – it doesn’t know where its next meal is coming from. If it comes across a glut of prey, it makes sense to kill as many as it can while it can. Given time, the fox will carry off and bury every chicken it has killed in order to eat them later, but usually dawn or people arrive before it achieved that, and it has to leave. So if you notice that a fox is in your chicken-house, leave it. If you don’t, it will just come back for more.

Don’t call for hunters, a better protection of the chicken-house also does the trick.

I’ve shot them a thousand times and will probably do so for the rest of my shooting career.

It really pays to get up early in the morning and experience the earth waking up; hear the first bird songs, watch a startled deer run away and observe the delicate changes in the rolling hills created by radiation fog (what’s that?).  Don’t use rain as an excuse, as a matter of fact, it is the perfect time to get those dramatic black ‘n white images!
